Mali Camberis
Team Leader - Le Gros Laboratory
BSc (VUW), CertMgmtStudies (VUW)
Mali Camberis is Team Leader in the Le Gros Laboratory.
Mali studied parasitology at Victoria University and spent six years working at AgResearch Wallaceville under Dr Ken McNatty.
She joined the Malaghan Institute in 1996 working under Professor Graham Le Gros as a research scientist investigating the cellular events that underpin protective immunity against parasites. In 2015 she completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Management Studies.
Mali has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience in the biology of rodent parasites Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and Heligmosomoides polygyrus and have co-authored the Methods Chapter on Nippostrongylus brasiliensis & Heligmosomoides polygyrus in Current Protocols in Immunology. She has experience in the biology of human hookworm and novel methods of production.
Research interests
"Human hookworm is an exquisite and intriguing organism as despite it being regarded as a major human pathogen in developing countries; it has this innate ability to modulate inflammation.
"Our aim is to better understand the intimate relationship between hookworm and their human hosts. This includes exploring the therapeutic potential of human hookworms to better understand the effects human hookworms have on an individual’s immune system, gut bacteria composition and function, and then translate that to a disease setting. We are also developing GMP methods to produce, store and delivery system for hookworm larvae to be used for clinical trials."
